Description

A non-invasive test for assessing hormonal imbalance and identifying possible causes of hormonally mediated pathology of the reproductive system.

Usually, for the diagnosis of hormonal disorders, testing a single hormone is rarely used, since most of them are in very close interaction with each other. Therefore, it is most often necessary to assess several parameters simultaneously.

Progesterone is a hormone that affects the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryonic development of the fetus. It is a key intermediate in the production of other endogenous steroids, including sex hormones and corticosteroids.

Most of the progesterone circulating in the blood is in a protein-bound state, and only 1–2% of the hormone is in a free form and exhibits biological activity. The free hormone enters the saliva in equivalent amounts, and changes in the concentration of progesterone circulating in the bloodstream are also reflected in its level in saliva. Estradiol (17-beta-estradiol) is a female sex hormone with the highest biological activity and diagnostic value.

Estradiol plays a crucial role in the development and functioning of the female reproductive system, namely: it participates in the formation of secondary female sexual characteristics, regulates the menstrual cycle and the process of ovulation, prepares the body for possible pregnancy, and increases sensitivity to other hormones responsible for maintaining pregnancy. Determination of estradiol levels assists in the diagnosis of disorders of the female reproductive system associated with deviations of this hormone from normal.

When and who needs the test?

  • For diagnosing the causes of menstrual cycle disorders, reproductive dysfunction, pregnancy pathologies, and in cases of suspected infertility.
  • Monitoring therapy during treatment with steroid hormone medications.
  • Assessing hormonal status when using assisted reproductive technologies (during IVF planning).
