9698. Genetics. Apolipoprotein E, genotyping (Alzheimer's disease 2; AD2)

Genetic research to determine the genotype of the rs7412 polymorphism of the APOE gene. This polymorphism is one of the two genetic variants that combine to determine the main APOE variants – ε2, ε3 and ε4. A separate determination of rs7412 does not allow for full APOE genotyping and assessment of the associated genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease.

The APOE gene contains information for the formation of apolipoprotein E, a protein involved in the transport and exchange of cholesterol and other lipids, as well as in the functioning of the nervous system.

The main variants of APOE - ε2, ε3 and ε4 - are characterized by a combination of two polymorphisms: rs7412 and rs429358. The rs7412 polymorphism defines the amino acid at position 158 of apolipoprotein E and is one of two genetic variants required to establish the complete APOE genotype.

The ε4 variant is associated with an increased likelihood of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease. However, its presence does not mean that the disease will necessarily develop, and its absence does not exclude the possibility of its occurrence.

During this study, only the genotype of the rs7412 polymorphism is determined. Without simultaneous determination of rs429358, complete APOE genotyping, including detection of ε4 carrier and associated genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease, cannot be established.
