Description
Vitamin C is a substance from the group of water-soluble vitamins. It is involved in the synthesis of hormones, the metabolism of fats, amino acids and vitamins, is an antioxidant and detoxifier, provides strength to the walls of blood vessels, affects the functioning of the immune system.
This test is used to detect vitamin C deficiency, manifested by bleeding gums, skin rashes, dry skin, muscle pain, loosening and loss of teeth, weakened immunity, signs of anemia. Vitamin C levels should be studied in conjunction with assessment of other vitamins.
When and who needs the test?
- determining the status of ascorbic acid, monitoring therapy, monitoring oral intake of ascorbic acid (assessment of the individual ability of intestinal absorption of vitamin C), inflammation and increased bleeding of the gums, impaired wound healing, weight loss, anorexia, tooth mobility;
- adentia, smoking, alcoholism, thyrotoxicosis, dialysis, pregnancy, breastfeeding, type I diabetes mellitus, hemorrhagic rash, bleeding tendency (nasal, from the oral mucosa), deterioration in general well-being, increased fatigue;
- decreased immunity, starvation, unbalanced nutrition, capillary fragility, petechiae, bruising, purpura, dryness of the oral mucosa;
- dry eye syndrome, joint pain, diseases of the small intestine (Crohn's disease, celiac disease, Whipple's disease), the elderly.
