Description
Cadmium is a heavy metal that, when ingested, can cause severe intoxication (poisoning). Cadmium poisoning occurs when it enters the stomach or respiratory tract.
The main symptoms of poisoning with this metal are headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, sweet taste in the mouth, respiratory failure (development of bronchopneumonia), and the perception of odors. Over time, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the blood system are drawn into the pathological process.
Determination of levels of cadmium in urine makes it possible to diagnose intoxication with this metal. The test should be taken in combination with general blood and urine tests, biochemical blood tests.
When and who needs the test?
- during the examination of people, working in conditions of high cadmium content;
- in the presence of clinical signs of cadmium poisoning;
- if there is a suspicion of eating food that contains cadmium compounds;
- during the examination of people in endemic zones of industrial pollution of the environment.
