9173. Islet cell antibody, IgG antibodies (ICA, method IFT)
Description
The islet apparatus of the pancreas (Islets of Langerhans) is the part of the pancreas responsible for the synthesis and secretion of insulin. The appearance of antibodies to the islets of Langerhans may indicate the development of type 1 diabetes in a patient.
The detection of these antibodies is used not only for diagnosis, but also for predicting the likelihood of developing the disease. It is extremely important that the test allows us to predict the development of diabetes mellitus 1-8 years before the onset of its clinical symptoms.
When and who needs the test?
- differential diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- identification of predisposition to diabetes mellitus in relatives of a patient with type 1 diabetes
- assessment of the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in polyendocrinopathy and other autoimmune diseases
