Description
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a protein synthesized in the liver and skeletal muscles (and in lower concentrations by other organs) under the influence of growth hormone. IGF-1 ensures active growth of the body, primarily stimulating the development of bone and cartilage tissue.
The assessment of IGF-1 levels is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of diseases characterized by impaired normal human growth. It is advisable to perform this test together with the assessment of growth hormone levels.
When and who needs the test?
- Diagnosis of gigantism and acromegaly.
- Diagnosis of dwarfism.
- Monitoring therapy for pituitary dwarfism, acromegaly, and gigantism.
