Description
ACTH is a substance synthesized by the pituitary gland that regulates the secretory activity of the adrenal glands. In addition, ACTH affects insulin secretion and fat metabolism and determines the body's resistance to environmental factors.
ACTH testing should be performed in the presence of symptoms associated with excessive or insufficient cortisol production; in cases of hormonal imbalance that may be related to pituitary or adrenal disorders. It is optimal to test ACTH together with cortisol levels.
When and who needs the test?
- Fatigue disproportionate to exertion, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Differential diagnosis of symptomatic arterial hypertension.
- Differential diagnosis of primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency.
- Suspicion of Cushing’s syndrome and differential diagnosis with Cushing’s disease.
- Long-term glucocorticoid therapy.
