9004. Aldosterone
Description
Aldosterone is a steroid hormone synthesized by the adrenal glands. It participates in the regulation of blood pressure and plays an important role in maintaining normal sodium and potassium concentrations in the blood.
Determination of aldosterone levels is widely used to identify the cause of high and low blood pressure (hypertension and hypotension), and for the diagnosis of adrenal and pituitary disorders.
It is important to assess aldosterone levels together with simultaneous measurement of renin levels and calculation of the aldosterone–renin ratio, as well as evaluation of potassium, sodium and ACTH levels.
