9001. Androstenedione
Description
Androstenedione is an androgen produced by the adrenal glands, ovaries in women, and testes in men. It plays a role in regulating the reproductive system. It is a precursor to testosterone and estrogens, with significantly lower biological activity compared to testosterone. Androstenedione testing is used to investigate the causes of reproductive system disorders (including infertility) and to diagnose adrenal tumors, in combination with free testosterone, 17-OH progesterone, and DHEA-S tests.
When and who needs the test?
Diagnosis of virilizing syndromes:
- polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Cushing’s syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, androgen-producing tumors of ovaries, testes or adrenal glands, and monitoring treatment of these conditions.
- Assessment of patients showing signs of hyperandrogenism: hirsutism (facial hair above the lip, on the chin, white line of the abdomen), severe acne, voice deepening, clitoromegaly, increased muscle mass.
- Evaluation of infants with ambiguous genitalia exhibiting both female and male characteristics.
