Description

Karyotyping of aborted material is aimed at identifying chromosomal abnormalities, which are the main cause of early pregnancy loss. The study is performed using GTG and FISH analysis between 5 and 11 weeks of pregnancy.

Karyotyping of aborted material (abortus) is a cytogenetic study of the chromosomal make-up of an embryo or fetus recovered after a miscarriage or missed abortion.

The study is performed using a combination of GTG test and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) – methods that can detect:

  • numerical chromosomal abnormalities (trisomies, monosomies);
  • structural rearrangements (deletions, duplications, translocations);
  • mosaicism.

The results help determine the presence of a spontaneous mutation or the risk of recurrence of the pathology in subsequent pregnancies. This study is critical for medical genetic counseling.

When and who needs the test?

  • Women who have had a spontaneous miscarriage or missed abortion between 5 and 11 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Couples with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • If a genetic cause for miscarriage is suspected.
  • To predict the success of subsequent pregnancies.
  • Before planning IVF or invasive prenatal testing.
