Description
A throat culture for fungal microflora of the Candida genus is a microbiological test that allows the detection of yeast-like fungi of the Candida spp. genus in throat samples and the determination of their quantity. If clinically significant growth of Candida spp. is detected, the study is supplemented with an assessment of antifungal susceptibility – an antimycogram performed using the classical disk diffusion method.
When and who needs the test?
- Presence of symptoms of fungal infection of the oropharynx (plaque, burning, pain during swallowing, dry mouth, unpleasant taste).
- Suspected candidiasis after prolonged antibiotic therapy, corticosteroid, or immunosuppressant use.
- Diabetes mellitus, oncohematological or immunodeficiency conditions (including HIV).
- Ineffectiveness of standard candidiasis therapy or frequent disease recurrences.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of antifungal therapy and the need to select an alternative medication.
- Preventive examination in at-risk patients before long-term antibiotic treatment, chemotherapy, or after transplantation.
