Description

A throat culture for fungal microflora of the Candida genus is a microbiological test that allows the detection of yeast-like fungi of the Candida spp. genus in throat samples and the determination of their quantity.

If clinically significant growth of Candida spp. is detected, the study is supplemented with an assessment of antifungal susceptibility – an antimycogram performed using the classical disk diffusion method.

Automated identification of microorganisms is performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry on the MALDI Biotyper sirius IVD System analyzer (Bruker, Germany).

Candida fungi are conditionally pathogenic microorganisms: normally, they may be present on human mucous membranes without causing symptoms. However, under certain conditions – such as weakened immunity, prolonged use of antibiotics or corticosteroids, chronic diseases, diabetes, or cancer – they can multiply actively, leading to inflammation.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush) manifests as a white or cream coating on the mucous membranes of the cheeks, tongue, tonsils, and the posterior pharyngeal wall, accompanied by pain, burning, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, or difficulty swallowing.

These lesions are most often observed in newborns, people with weakened immune systems, and patients undergoing long-term antibacterial therapy.

Automated identification of microorganisms is performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry on the MALDI Biotyper sirius IVD System analyzer (Bruker, Germany). If clinically significant results are obtained, antifungal susceptibility testing (antimycogram) is carried out using the disk diffusion method, which helps to select effective treatment considering possible resistant strains.

In case of a positive result, self-treatment is not recommended – it is necessary to consult a doctor for clinical evaluation and therapy selection.

When and who needs the test?

  • Presence of symptoms of fungal infection of the oropharynx (plaque, burning, pain during swallowing, dry mouth, unpleasant taste).
  • Suspected candidiasis after prolonged antibiotic therapy, corticosteroid, or immunosuppressant use.
  • Diabetes mellitus, oncohematological or immunodeficiency conditions (including HIV).
  • Ineffectiveness of standard candidiasis therapy or frequent disease recurrences.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of antifungal therapy and the need to select an alternative medication.
  • Preventive examination in at-risk patients before long-term antibiotic treatment, chemotherapy, or after transplantation.

Biological material

  • Various types of speciamen depending on the test

Preparing for pharyngeal swab taking

  • Take the material before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antimycotic drugs.
  • In the case of treatment control – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antimycotic drugs after 14 days.
  • Take the material on an empty stomach or 3-4 hours after consuming food and drinks.
  • Do not smoke 4 hours...
