Description

Cultures for Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum allow for the detection of viable pathogens and determination of their antibiotic susceptibility. They are used for chronic urogenital infections, infertility, treatment failure, or recurrent STIs.

Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum are opportunistic microflora that can be part of the normal microbiota of the urogenital tract. In small numbers, they pose no danger, but if the microflora balance is disrupted, the immune system is weakened, or hormonal levels are altered, they can cause inflammatory diseases. In women, they can cause cervicitis, vaginitis, endometritis, inflammation of the appendages, and pregnancy complications (miscarriages, premature births). In men, they can cause urethritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, and impaired spermatogenesis.

Bacteriological culture of urogenital material allows us to detect live colonies of these pathogens and determine their number (CFU/ml), which helps differentiate between bacterial carriage and active infection.

An antibiogram is especially important, allowing us to select effective therapy taking into account increasing resistance to macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones. This significantly increases the effectiveness of treatment, especially when previous therapy has been ineffective or there are repeated episodes of STIs.

When and who needs the test?

  • If chronic or recurrent urethritis, cervicitis, or vaginitis is suspected.
  • Couples with infertility or unsuccessful IVF attempts.
  • Women with pelvic inflammatory disease or pregnancy complications (preterm labor, chorioamnionitis).
  • Men with prostatitis, epididymitis, or abnormal sperm analysis.
  • If previous STI treatment has been ineffective or targeted antibiotic therapy is needed.

Biological material

  • Urogenital swab
