Description

Complete blood count (CBC) is a basic but highly sensitive laboratory test that allows evaluation of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of blood cells. An extended CBC includes automated blood formula determination, manual leukocyte differential count, platelet evaluation by the Fonio method, and measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). This test helps physicians identify inflammatory processes, anemia, infections, allergies, hematologic disorders, and monitor treatment effectiveness.

Complete blood count (CBC) is a universal screening method that allows physicians to assess the functional state of the hematopoietic system. It is widely used in diagnosing diseases of nearly all organs and systems. Additional manual leukocyte differential count improves informativeness and accuracy, and platelet counting by the Fonio method prevents pseudothrombocytopenia – falsely low platelet counts caused by platelet clumping or presence of giant platelets. This study evaluates the following components:

Quantity and morphology of red blood cells – indicates presence or absence of anemia, its type (hypo-, normo-, hyperchromic) and possible causes; Hemoglobin level – key oxygen transport indicator, reduced levels may suggest chronic blood loss or synthesis disruption;

Hematocrit – proportion of formed elements to total blood volume; White blood cell count and differential – helps detect viral and bacterial infections, allergies or leukemia;

Manual differential – performed when atypical cells are suspected that automated systems cannot detect, allowing detailed leukocyte morphology assessment;

Platelets – important for assessing bleeding or thrombosis risk; Platelet count by Fonio method – microscopic evaluation used when pseudothrombocytopenia is suspected (clumping in the test tube) or when automated counts are critically low;

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) – nonspecific but important marker of chronic inflammation, infection, rheumatic disease or cancer.

This test allows early pathology detection or monitoring of chronic disease progression. The combination of automated and manual methods enhances result accuracy and reliability.

When and who needs the test?

When?

  • At the initial visit to a doctor to assess overall health.
  • When symptoms of infection, inflammation, or allergy appear. Before and after surgical interventions.
  • During treatment with chemotherapy or immunosuppressive drugs.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment provided.

Who?

  • Patients with chronic conditions (anemia, autoimmune diseases, cancer).
  • Patients at risk of coagulation disorders or bleeding.

Biological material

  • Venous blood

Preparing for a blood test

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
  • 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
