Description

The analysis is performed using microscopic examination of epithelial scrapings to detect mites of the genus Demodex. The presence of a large number of parasites may indicate the possible development of demodicosis.

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are microscopic mites that normally reside on human skin, but when the immune system is weakened or the sebaceous glands are dysfunctional, they cause demodicosis. In humans, demodicosis manifests itself in two main clinical forms, which differ in the location of the lesion and symptoms.

  • The cutaneous (dermatological) form of demodicosis most often affects the face, particularly areas with increased sebaceous gland activity: the forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks.
  • The ophthalmic form of demodicosis (eyelid demodicosis, or ophthalmodemodicosis) affects the eyelid margins and hair follicles. Demodex can also infect the eyebrow hair follicles.

The causes of demodicosis include decreased immunity, hormonal changes (increased androgen levels), excessive activity of the sebaceous glands, chronic diseases, stress, improper skin care, excessive ultraviolet radiation, and genetic predisposition.

  • For patients suspected of having demodicosis to confirm the diagnosis.

  • Do not use decorative cosmetics, personal hygiene products with a high alkali content, various creams, do not use local medications for 3 days before the procedure.
  • Do not wash with water 24 hours before the test.
