Description

The test is used to diagnose rotavirus gastroenteritis, which is one of the most common causes of acute viral diarrhea, especially in young children.

Rotavirus is an extremely common, highly contagious microorganism that causes severe forms of acute gastroenteritis, especially in young children.

Transmission is via the fecal-oral route.

The incubation period for rotavirus infection is 24-48 hours. The disease begins acutely, with watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Dehydration can develop rapidly in young children. Mild cases last 5-7 days.

Rotavirus antigen testing in stool is used to confirm the rotavirus etiology of acute diarrhea in the presence of a typical clinical picture.

When and who needs the test?

  • Adults and children with symptoms of acute intestinal infection: diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, dehydration.
  • If a viral etiology of gastroenteritis is suspected, to differentiate it from a bacterial or parasitic infection.
  • In cases of intestinal infection outbreaks in organized groups (childcare facilities, hospitals, military units, etc.).

  • Feces should not be sent for testing after an enema, insertion of suppositories, or intake of castor or vaseline oil.
  • According to the indications, the doctor prescribes a trial diet, which the patient follows for 4-5 days.
