4024. Finding of antibodies to erythrocytes by AB0 system
Important information
*The test can be performed only on women with blood type: О (I), A (II), B (III)
Description
ABO antibody screening is a laboratory test that detects specific antibodies in a patient’s blood against A or B antigens, which may be absent on their own red blood cells. These antibodies can occur naturally or develop after a transfusion with incompatible blood or during pregnancy. This test is essential for safe blood transfusions, monitoring pregnancy, and diagnosing immune-related hemolytic conditions. It is recommended to perform this test together with blood typing and Rh factor determination using the Direct Coombs Test.
When and who needs the test?
When?
- Before a blood transfusion to prevent hemolytic reactions due to ABO incompatibility.
- During pregnancy, especially in women with blood group O, to assess the risk of developing hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN).
Who?
- Newborns with symptoms of jaundice or anemia to diagnose a possible immune conflict.
- Patients suspected of having autoimmune hemolytic anemia to detect autoantibodies.
Biological material
- Venous blood
