Description
Anti-Rh alloimmune antibodies are immunoglobulins produced by the body in response to exposure to red blood cell (RBC) antigens that differ from the individual’s own, most commonly Rh system antigens. These antibodies are usually detected using the Indirect Coombs Test. This test is critically important during pregnancy, before a blood transfusion, and after one has been given.
When and who needs the test?
When?
- In the first trimester of pregnancy and throughout the course of pregnancy.
- After potentially sensitizing events such as bleeding, amniocentesis, external cephalic version, abdominal trauma, or miscarriage.
- Before and after a blood transfusion.
- In cases of complicated obstetric history, such as previous unexplained pregnancy loss or placental insufficiency.
Who?
- Pregnant women with Rh(D)-negative status.
- Patients receiving blood transfusions, especially those who are Rh(D)-negative.
