Description

Real-time polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) detects the genetic material (RNA) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal samples. This highly sensitive and specific method allows for confirmation of active infection even in the early stages, when symptoms have not yet appeared or are mild. A positive result indicates an ongoing viral infection.

SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

It is transmitted primarily by airborne droplets and through contact with contaminated surfaces. The incubation period is 2-14 days. Symptoms range from mild to severe and may include:

  • fever;
  • cough;
  • shortness of breath;
  • loss of taste and smell;
  • muscle pain; headache;
  • gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea and diarrhea).

COVID-19 can cause complications, including pneumonia, thrombosis, and myocarditis, especially in patients with chronic illnesses, weakened immune systems, or the elderly.

The SARS-CoV-2 PCR test (rRT-PCR) is a confirmatory method for diagnosing COVID-19.

When and who needs the test?

In the presence of symptoms of acute respiratory viral infection or if COVID-19 is suspected, to confirm or exclude the diagnosis.

Biological material

  • Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab

Preparing for naso-oropharyngeal swab taking

  • For 4–5 hours before sampling, do not use nasal drops, do not rinse the nasal passages.
  • The biomaterial is taken under fasting conditions or 3–4 hours after eating and drinking.
  • It is not recommended to brush your teeth, rinse your mouth/throat, or smoke for 3–4 hours before sampling.
