Description

This PCR complex includes testing for the seven most common viruses that cause acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Test is performed using real-time PCR (rRT-PCR) using a naso-oropharyngeal swab.

The test detects RNA or DNA of respiratory viruses even in the early stages of infection, when symptoms are not yet clearly differentiated clinically. This allows for the precise etiology of the disease to be determined, avoiding unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and selecting the appropriate treatment strategy.

Influenza A/B viruses are respiratory viruses that cause influenza with severe intoxication, fever, dry cough, and muscle pain. Influenza A virus can cause seasonal epidemics and pandemics.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of bronchiolitis and viral pneumonia in children under 2 years of age. In adults, it can cause severe lower respiratory tract infections, especially in the presence of immunosuppression.

Metapneumovirus is clinically similar to RSV. It causes both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. It is often detected in children, the elderly, and patients with underlying medical conditions.

Adenovirus can affect the respiratory tract, conjunctiva, and gastrointestinal tract. It causes pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, tonsillitis, and sometimes gastroenteritis. It is known to be highly persistent in the environment.

Rhinovirus is usually mild but can trigger exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

Parainfluenza virus often causes croup (stenosing laryngotracheitis) in children. It affects the larynx, trachea, and bronchi, and can cause laryngitis, tracheitis, and bronchitis.

Laboratory diagnostics help identify the pathogen, which is necessary for appropriate treatment selection and assessment of the disease's progression.

When and who needs the test?

  • Patients with acute respiratory infection symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Elderly patients, particularly those with chronic respiratory diseases.
  • For differential diagnosis of viral and bacterial pathogens (e.g., before prescribing antibiotic therapy).
  • In cases of severe or atypical respiratory infection.

Biological material

  • Scrapes from various sites depending on the test

Preparing for naso-oropharyngeal swab taking

  • For 4–5 hours before sampling, do not use nasal drops, do not rinse the nasal passages.
  • The biomaterial is taken under fasting conditions or 3–4 hours after eating and drinking.
  • It is not recommended to brush your teeth, rinse your mouth/throat, or smoke for 3–4 hours before sampling.
