Description
Determination of HIV-1 RNA in blood serum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with real-time detection.
The accuracy of a negative test result is certain if you have not been exposed to HIV infection in the past six months.
When and who needs the test?
Quantitative determination of plasma HIV-1 RNA levels (viral load) in persons living with HIV-1:
- Monitoring HIV-1 disease progression before or during antiretroviral therapy – before starting antiretroviral therapy to determine the initial level of viral load.
- Who may have developed HIV-1 drug resistance during antiretroviral therapy.
- Who may not comply with antiretroviral therapy.
The test is used to confirm the diagnosis in individuals during the serological window (incubation period and the first weeks of the stage of primary manifestations).
The test can be used when negative and questionable results are obtained in the immune or linear block.
A negative result indicates the absence of infection as a result of contacts that occurred more than six months ago.
