Description
PCR testing for cytomegalovirus (CMV) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) allows detection of CMV DNA and assessment of viral load in the central nervous system. It is used for diagnosing CNS involvement in newborns, immunocompromised patients, and in cases of meningitis, encephalitis, or ventriculitis.
When and who needs the test?
Who and when is testing recommended for?
- Newborns – with suspected congenital CNS involvement.
- Patients with neurological symptoms (meningitis, encephalitis, seizures).
- Immunosuppressed individuals (HIV, oncology, transplant recipients).
- When CMV meningitis or encephalitis is clinically suspected.
- For assessing viral load in cerebrospinal fluid as part of a comprehensive diagnostic workup.
