3138. PCR. Varicella-zoster virus (contents of vesicles, qualitative determination)

Varicella-Zoster virus PCR testing of vesicle contents is an accurate method for detecting herpes simplex virus type 3 (VZV), which causes chickenpox and shingles. This test allows for confirmation of the diagnosis even in cases of atypical rashes.

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) is a human herpesvirus type 3 that causes chickenpox during primary infection and shingles during reactivation. Both forms of the disease can cause characteristic blisters (vesicles) to appear on the skin, which contain high concentrations of the virus.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a modern method that can detect the presence of viral DNA even in minimal concentrations. The contents of the vesicles – fluid from the blisters that form on the skin during the acute phase of the disease – are analyzed.

This test:

• provides rapid and accurate confirmation of the diagnosis;
• allows differentiation of VZV from other herpes viruses (e.g., HSV);
• is effective even in patients with atypical manifestations or immunosuppression;
• can be critical for treatment decisions for neuroinfections (encephalitis, meningitis) if VZV is a possible causative agent.

• If chickenpox or shingles with blisters is suspected.
• If the rash is atypical or abscessed, when the clinical picture does not allow a definitive diagnosis.
• For immunocompromised patients, who may have an atypical course of the disease.
• For pregnant women with suspected VZV infection – for rapid verification of the pathogen.
• For skin or mucous membrane lesions requiring differential diagnosis of VZV from other herpesviruses.
