Description

Varicella-Zoster Virus PCR in saliva is a noninvasive test that detects herpesvirus type 3 (VZV), which causes chickenpox and shingles. It is suitable for diagnostic testing in children, immunocompromised patients, and those with suspected viral reactivation.

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) is a herpesvirus type 3 known as the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles. After primary infection, the virus remains in the body for life and can reactivate, especially in people with weakened immune systems.

Salivary PCR is a convenient, noninvasive method for detecting VZV viral DNA even in the early stages of infection or during reactivation. Since saliva may contain the virus during active infection, its analysis allows:

  • to confirm infection without the need to collect blood or vesicle contents.
  • to conduct diagnostics in patients from whom other biopsy samples are unavailable.
  • to use the method in children, debilitated patients, and people with bleeding disorders.

This test is often used in combination with PCR in blood or vesicles, especially in clinically inconclusive or attenuated cases.

When and who needs the test?

  • If chickenpox or shingles is suspected, especially in the absence of a rash.
  • For patients with atypical disease or weakened immune systems.
  • For non-invasive diagnostics (children, the elderly, cancer patients).
  • For monitoring viral reactivation in immunosuppressed individuals.
  • For pregnant women when other sample collection methods are not possible.

Biological material

  • Saliva

Preparing for a saliva testing

  • for 4 hours before collecting saliva, avoid eating, drinking alcohol, and taking medications;
  • rinse your mouth with boiled water three times before collecting saliva;
  • deliver to the department according to the schedule for collecting the material.
