3136. PCR. Epstein-Barr virus (CSF, quantification)
Important information
*The material should be delivered to the laboratory. Material should be taken by the doctor
Description
Quantitative EBV PCR in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) allows for the detection of viral DNA in the central nervous system. It is used in cases of suspected viral meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis, and lymphoproliferative lesions of the central nervous system, especially in patients with immunodeficiency or HIV.
When and who needs the test?
- If viral meningitis or encephalitis is suspected, especially if standard cultures or other viruses are negative.
- In patients with HIV/AIDS, especially those with a low CD4 count or signs of CNS involvement.
- In lymphoid lesions of the brain (particularly in transplant patients).
- In case of nonspecific neurological symptoms: headache, nausea, behavioral changes, seizures, impaired consciousness.
- To monitor the effectiveness of antiviral or immunosuppressive treatment over time.
Biological material
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
