Description
This test helps determine whether the herpes virus type 6 (HHV-6) is active in the cerebrospinal fluid. It is prescribed for suspected nervous system damage, such as encephalitis, meningitis, or seizures, especially in children or people with weakened immune systems. It is also used to monitor treatment.
When and who needs the test?
- For encephalitis, meningitis, or seizures of unknown origin.
- In newborns and young children with suspected neonatal infection.
- In patients after transplants, chemotherapy, and with HIV infection.
- For sudden changes in consciousness, agitation, and disorientation.
- For monitoring treatment or reactivation of HHV-6 in the central nervous system.
