PCR testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae in semen is an accurate method for detecting gonococcal infections affecting the male genitourinary system. It is recommended for urethritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, sperm abnormalities, infertility, and recurrent STIs.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium that causes gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that can affect various parts of the male genitourinary tract, including the urethra, prostate, epididymis, and even the testicles. In many cases, the infection presents with:

• urethral discharge;
• pain during urination;
• perineal or scrotal discomfort;
• and sometimes it is asymptomatic or mild.

The infection can cause:

• epididymitis;
• chronic prostatitis;
• inflammatory lesions of the vas deferens;
• decreased sperm quality – decreased motility, concentration, increased white blood cell count, or sperm DNA fragmentation.

PCR analysis of ejaculate allows:

• detection of N. gonorrhoeae DNA directly in semen, even if other samples (scrapings, urine) are negative;
• to assess the possible role of infection in male infertility;
• to clarify the diagnosis based on prostatitis symptoms or inflammatory changes in the spermogram of unknown origin;
• to ensure high sensitivity even with a low bacterial load.
