Description

PCR testing for Trichomonas vaginalis in prostate secretions is a highly sensitive method for detecting the infection that causes chronic prostatitis. The test is used for pelvic pain, decreased fertility, STI complications, and recurrent prostatitis.

Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause prostate damage in men. The infection is often asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic, but in some cases it can cause:

  • chronic prostatitis;
  • perineal discomfort;
  • ejaculatory dysfunction;
  • decreased libido;
  • changes in spermatogenesis and fertility.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive method that detects T. vaginalis DNA directly in prostate fluid, even with a low parasite load.

The test is especially valuable in situations where:

  • PCR results from urine or swabs are negative, but symptoms persist;
  • recurrent prostatitis without a clearly identified pathogen;
  • there is a suspicion of a chronic STI, which can impair sperm quality and reduce the success of ART.

When and who needs the test?

  • men with chronic pelvic pain or prostatitis of unknown etiology;
  • in cases of decreased fertility or abnormal sperm analysis;
  • in cases of negative urine smear/PCR results in the presence of complaints;
  • before IVF, ICSI, or sperm donation;
  • in cases of recurrent urogenital infections or failure of previous treatment.

  • In the case of control treatment – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antimycotic drugs after 14 days.
