Description

PCR testing for Trichomonas vaginalis in semen is an accurate method for detecting the DNA of the causative agent of trichomoniasis. It is used for urethritis, prostatitis, decreased fertility, as well as in cases of recurrent STIs or negative results from swabs and scrapings.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasitic protozoan that causes trichomoniasis, a primarily sexually transmitted infection. In men, the infection is often asymptomatic but can lead to:

  • non-gonococcal urethritis;
  • chronic prostatitis;
  • epididymitis;
  • decreased sperm quality – decreased motility, increased white blood cell count, and sperm DNA fragmentation.

PCR testing of semen allows for the direct detection of the pathogen's DNA in the ejaculate. This is especially important in cases of:

  • negative smears or scrapings;
  • chronic infection without obvious clinical manifestations;
  • suspected infectious infertility.

This method has high analytical sensitivity and can detect Trichomonas even in cases of parasitic infection or in asymptomatic carriers.

When and who needs the test?

  • men with symptoms of urethritis, pain, dysuria, or abnormal discharge;
  • if trichomoniasis with prostate involvement is suspected;
  • in patients with sperm abnormalities (asthenospermia, leukocytospermia);
  • couples with unexplained infertility or unsuccessful IVF attempts;
  • in cases of recurrent STIs or in cases of treatment failure;
  • as an alternative to a swab/scraping in asymptomatic patients who fall into high-risk groups.

Preparing for semen testing

  • The material should be collected before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antimycotic drugs (general and local).
  • In the case of control treatment – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antimycotic drugs after 14 days.
  • Continue to refrain from ejaculation for 3 days.
  • During the day, avoid...
