Description

PCR testing of prostate secretions for Mycoplasma hominis is aimed at the detection of pathogen DNA directly in prostate tissue. It is used for chronic prostatitis, pelvic pain, infertility, and ineffective STI treatment.

Mycoplasma hominis is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause chronic bacterial prostatitis, urethritis, and reproductive and fertility problems in men. Due to its intracellular nature, the bacterium can persist in prostate tissue for long periods, undetectable in urine or swabs.

PCR testing of prostate secretions allows for the highly accurate detection of M. hominis DNA specifically at the site of inflammation. This is aimed at the diagnosing of infection even with a low bacterial load or subtle symptoms. This test is important in cases where standard methods (urine and swab PCR) are inconclusive, but the clinical picture suggests an underlying infection.

Chronic prostate infection can lead to:

  • persistent pelvic pain;
  • dysuria, difficulty urinating;
  • decreased libido, ejaculation dysfunction;
  • changes in sperm count and male infertility.

When and who needs the test?

  • Men with symptoms of chronic prostatitis or pelvic pain.
  • If urine/smear PCR results are negative but symptoms persist.
  • In patients with infertility, abnormal sperm analysis, or leukocytospermia.
  • Before prescribing antibacterial therapy or if chlamydia/mycoplasma is suspected.

  • Prostatic secretion

Preparing for prostate secretion testing

  • The material should be collected before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antimycotic drugs (general and local).
  • In the case of control treatment – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antimycotic drugs after 14 days.
  • Continue to refrain from ejaculation for 3 days.
  • During the day, avoid...
