Description

PCR testing of semen for Mycoplasma genitalium is aimed at the accurate detection of DNA from the pathogen, which is associated with urethritis, prostatitis, and male infertility. This method is especially valuable in cases of asymptomatic or chronic infection.

Mycoplasma genitalium is a highly invasive sexually transmitted pathogen that can persist in the urogenital tract, causing chronic inflammatory processes. In men, this bacterium is a significant cause of non-gonococcal urethritis, epididymitis, prostatitis, and decreased fertility.

The infection is often asymptomatic or has mild symptoms, but it disrupts spermatogenesis and the microenvironment in which sperm mature. It can lead to:

  • decreased sperm count and motility;
  • leukocytospermia;
  • sperm DNA fragmentation;
  • reduced fertilization rates during natural or assisted reproduction (IVF, ICSI).

PCR is the method of choice for detecting M. genitalium, as culturing this bacterium is difficult and unavailable in most laboratories. Semen analysis allows the pathogen to be identified directly in the ejaculate, which is important for assessing the impact of infection on fertility.

When and who needs the test?

  • For men with abnormal sperm analysis or unexplained infertility.
  • For symptoms of chronic prostatitis, urethritis, or pelvic pain.
  • Before IVF, ICSI, sperm donation, or cryopreservation.
  • For recurrent STIs or failure of previous therapy.
  • For couples with unsuccessful conceiving attempts or early pregnancy losses.

  • Continue to refrain from ejaculation for 3 days.
