Description

Genetic testing for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations is a key method for assessing the hereditary risk of breast and ovarian cancer. It is recommended for women and men with a family history of cancer.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are tumor suppressor genes responsible for DNA repair. Inherited mutations in these genes significantly increase the risk of developing:

  • in women: breast cancer (up to 80% of lifetime cancers), ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and peritoneal cancer;
  • in men: breast cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

This test detects eight common pathogenic mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are most prevalent in Eastern European and Ukrainian populations.

Detection of BRCA mutations allows for:

  • individualization of surveillance strategies;
  • planning preventive measures (more frequent screening, prophylactic mastectomy/oophorectomy);
  • use of targeted therapy (PARP inhibitors for BRCA-positive tumors).

When and who needs the test?

Women with:

  • a strong family history of breast, ovarian, or pancreatic cancer;
  • a cancer diagnosis before age 45;
  • three or more cases of cancer in the family;
  • triple-negative breast cancer;
  • a combination of breast and ovarian cancer.

Men with:

  • a family history of breast cancer;
  • early-onset prostate cancer;
  • hereditary pancreatic cancer.

Patients with a cancer diagnosis – to determine prognostic markers and treatment options.

Biological material

  • Venous blood

Preparing for a blood test

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach;
  • 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
