3072. PCR. Herpes virus type 1 and 2 (CSF, qualitative determination)

PCR testing for herpesvirus types 1 and 2 in cerebrospinal fluid is a highly accurate method for detecting HSV infection of the central nervous system. It is performed when herpes meningitis or encephalitis is suspected, especially in weakened patients.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 can cause not only rashes on the skin and mucous membranes but also severe damage to the central nervous system.

HSV-1 is most often associated with herpes encephalitis.

HSV-1 is associated with herpes meningitis, especially in children, newborns, and immunocompromised patients.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the gold standard for diagnosis when a herpes infection of the brain or its membranes is suspected. This method allows for the rapid and accurate detection of HSV-1 or HSV-2 DNA, even in the absence of obvious symptoms.

The test is performed in cases of:

• sudden changes in consciousness, seizures, severe headache;
• meningitis or encephalitis of unknown origin;
• conditions requiring urgent identification of the cause to initiate treatment.

• If viral encephalitis or meningitis is suspected.
• In patients with high fever, seizures, or impaired consciousness.
• In newborns and older children – if neonatal herpes is suspected.
• In immunosuppressed individuals (those with HIV, cancer, or after organ transplantation).
• For rapid verification of HSV as a cause of CNS damage.
• In cases of atypical herpes infection.
