Description

More than 90% of people are infected with herpes simplex viruses type 1 and 2. They provoke the development of herpes on the skin and mucous membranes of the face, in the perineum, buttocks, limbs. Sexual contact is one of the most common ways of their spread. In such cases, there is a high probability of damage to the organs of the genitourinary system by viruses.

Determination of the genetic material of viruses in the urogenital scraping allows us to confirm the penetration of herpes viruses of types 1 and 2 into the urinary tract.

The test is used to diagnose herpetic lesions of the genitourinary system and their differential diagnosis with other sexually transmitted diseases.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV):

  • HSV-1 typically causes cold sores on the lips, but can also affect the genital area;
  • HSV-2 is the main cause of genital herpes, which is sexually transmitted;

Genital herpes presents with rashes, itching, burning, pain, or cracked skin. The infection is mostly asymptomatic but remains contagious.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a sensitive method for detecting HSV-1 or HSV-2 DNA in a swab from the urogenital mucosa. The test not only confirms the presence of the virus but also identifies its type, which is important for prognosis, treatment, and reducing the risk of transmission.

When and who needs the test?

  • For rashes, pain, burning, cracks, or itching in the genital area.
  • If genital herpes is suspected, even without external symptoms.
  • For pregnant women – to eliminate the risk of infection to the fetus during childbirth.
  • For couples planning a pregnancy if one partner has herpes.
  • To detect the HSV type – HSV-1 or HSV-2 – in case of confirmed infection.
  • For patients with frequent or unusual herpes recurrences.
  • For monitoring after treatment or if a relapse is suspected.
