Description
PCR testing for herpes simplex virus type 1/2 in saliva is a noninvasive method for detecting active HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. It is suitable for diagnosing lesions of the lips, mouth, genital area, or asymptomatic cases.
When and who needs the test?
- For herpes outbreaks on the lips, tongue, and mouth.
- For recurrent oral herpes or suspected primary infection.
- If invasive sampling is impossible or undesirable.
- For pregnant women and children – for quick and painless diagnosis.
- For detection of the virus in asymptomatic cases, especially before childbirth or when planning a pregnancy.
- If exposed to a partner with active herpes.
