Description

This test accurately detects Gardnerella vaginalis, a bacterium associated with bacterial vaginosis. It is recommended for women with abnormal, foul-smelling discharge, itching, or for screening before surgery or pregnancy.

Gardnerella vaginalis is an opportunistic, gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacterium found in small numbers on the vaginal mucosa as part of the normal microbiome. Under normal conditions, its presence causes no symptoms. However, when the number of protective lactobacilli decreases, Gardnerella begins to actively multiply, displacing beneficial microflora. This imbalance triggers the development of bacterial vaginosis (gardnerellosis), a common condition characterized by an imbalance of the vaginal acid-base balance and an increase in opportunistic microorganisms.

The most characteristic symptoms of Gardnerella include profuse gray-white vaginal discharge, a pronounced "fishy" odor, itching, burning, discomfort, and irritation of the mucous membrane. In some cases, the disease may be asymptomatic.

Gardnerella vaginalis is also frequently associated with:

  • chronic inflammatory processes in the vagina;
  • microflora imbalances in women of reproductive age;
  • pregnancy complications (risk of premature birth, chorioamnionitis, etc.);
  • increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Diagnosis is performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Qualitative detection of Gardnerella vaginalis in a urogenital swab confirms the presence of the bacteria and indirectly assesses its concentration, which is important for diagnosis and selection of effective therapy.

When and who needs the test?

  • For women with symptoms of bacterial vaginosis:
    • abnormal, foul-smelling discharge, itching, and discomfort.
  • For diagnosing the causes of vaginal flora imbalances, especially with frequent recurrences.
  • For women planning pregnancy or preparing for invasive gynecological procedures.
  • As part of the differential diagnosis with other causes of abnormal vaginal discharge (e.g., candidiasis or trichomoniasis).

Biological material

  • Scrapes from various sites depending on the test

Preparing for urogenital sampling

  • Exclude sexual intercourses for 3 days before sampling.
  • Do not take antibacterial medications for 14 days before sampling.
  • For 3 days before sampling, exclude vaginal douche and the use of vaginal suppositories, ointments, gels, tampons.
  • Biomaterial should be taken at least 3 days after the end of menstruation....
