Description

PCR testing for Ureaplasma species from urogenital swabs is an accurate method for detecting infections that are often asymptomatic. It is recommended for urethritis, cervicitis, infertility, pelvic inflammatory diseases, pregnancy complications, and recurrent STIs.

Ureaplasma species (including Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum) are opportunistic pathogens that can be part of the normal microflora of the urogenital tract, but under certain conditions, they cause inflammatory processes. The infection is primarily transmitted sexually and is often asymptomatic or latent, complicating timely diagnosis.

In women, ureaplasmas are associated with cervicitis, bacterial vaginosis, endometritis, salpingitis, miscarriage, and unsuccessful IVF attempts. In men, they are associated with urethritis, prostatitis, decreased sperm quality, and chronic pelvic pain.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive method that detects the pathogen's DNA in a sample from the mucous membrane of the urethra (in men), cervix, or cervical canal (in women). Qualitative determination allows to establish the presence of infection even with a low bacterial load.

When and who needs the test?

  • For symptoms of a urogenital infection (abnormal discharge, itching, pain, dysuria).
  • For chronic or recurrent pelvic inflammatory diseases.
  • For couples with infertility or before IVF/ICSI programs.
  • For miscarriage, pregnancy complications, or suspected endometritis.
  • For suspected STIs with negative results from other tests.
  • As a screening tool for patients with high-risk sexual activity.
