Description

PCR testing for Mycoplasma genitalium from urogenital swabs is a highly sensitive method for detecting infections that are often asymptomatic. The test is used for urethritis, cervicitis, infertility, and recurrent STIs.

Mycoplasma genitalium is one of the most aggressive pathogens of sexually transmitted infections, primarily through sexual contact. Due to its ability to penetrate the epithelium of the urogenital tract and persist in cells for long periods, the infection often has a chronic or asymptomatic course.

In women, M. genitalium causes cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, implantation failure, miscarriage, and tubal infertility. In men, it causes non-gonococcal urethritis, chronic prostatitis, epididymitis, and decreased sperm quality.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is the method of choice for detecting Mycoplasma genitalium, as this microorganism is difficult to culture. Urogenital swab testing provides high diagnostic accuracy due to the direct detection of pathogen DNA in the mucous membrane of the cervix, cervical canal, or urethritis.

When and who needs the test?

  • For symptoms of urethritis, cervicitis, abnormal discharge, pain, or dysuria.
  • For suspected STIs, particularly those with recurrent or persistent infections.
  • For couples with infertility or unsuccessful IVF attempts.
  • For negative results for other pathogens, but persistent symptoms.
  • To clarify the etiology of chronic prostatitis, pelvic pain, or endometritis.
