Description

PCR testing for Chlamydia trachomatis from urogenital swabs allows for accurate detection of the pathogen's DNA. This qualitative detection allows for diagnosis of the infection even in asymptomatic cases.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an intracellular bacterium that often causes asymptomatic but potentially dangerous infections. In women, chlamydia can lead to damage to the cervix and fallopian tubes, salpingitis, chronic pelvic pain, and tubal infertility. In men, it can lead to urethritis, epididymitis, and decreased fertility.

Due to its asymptomatic nature, the infection often remains undetected and, therefore, untreated, which facilitates its spread among sexual partners and the development of complications.

For accurate diagnosis, PCR is used — a modern method that detects Chlamydia trachomatis DNA in a urogenital swab sample. This test is highly sensitive, detecting even trace amounts of bacteria, and is suitable for early detection, screening, and treatment monitoring.

When and who needs the test?

  • Women and men with symptoms of urogenital infection.
  • During examinations for infertility or inflammatory diseases.
  • When planning a pregnancy or before IVF.
  • If STIs are suspected in sexual partners.
  • To monitor treatment effectiveness (at least 3 weeks after the end of therapy).
