Description

A molecular genetic test that detects the genetic material (DNA) of hepatitis B virus in human blood. It serves as a marker of acute or chronic HBV infection.

Hepatitis B is an infectious disease that affects the liver. Infection can occur through contact with infected blood (blood transfusion, hemodialysis, injection drug use, etc.), through sexual transmission, or from mother to child during childbirth.

The disease is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • general weakness, elevated body temperature, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting lasting for several days;
  • yellow discoloration of the skin and sclera;
  • dark urine and pale stools.

Acute and chronic HBV infections are distinguished.

Chronic infection may lead to the development of cirrhosis and liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).

When and who needs the test?

  • In the presence of HBV symptoms.
  • In acute and chronic HBV infection.
  • Before initiating antiviral therapy.
  • To monitor the effectiveness of the therapy administered.

Preparing for a blood test

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach;
