Description

The test is designed to diagnose COVID-19 in patients of any age, even those without acute respiratory viral infection symptoms. It detects the specific nucleocapsid antigen of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal samples. A positive result indicates the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 viral antigen at the time of sample collection, indicating active infection. However, PCR testing is recommended for definitive confirmation of the diagnosis.

SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19). It is transmitted primarily by airborne droplets and through contact with contaminated surfaces.

The incubation period is 2-14 days. Symptoms range from mild to severe and may include:

  • fever;
  • cough;
  • shortness of breath;
  • loss of taste and smell;
  • muscle pain;
  • headache;
  • gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea and diarrhea).

COVID-19 can cause complications, including pneumonia, thrombosis, and myocarditis, especially in patients with chronic diseases, weakened immune systems, or the elderly.

Detection of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal samples is used as a screening method for diagnosing the infection.

When and who needs the test?

  • For people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection, to determine the cause of the illness.
  • For people who have had contact with COVID-19 patients, to assess the risk of infection.
