Description

The test detects antibodies to highly specific proteins of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacterial complex. According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines, the test is necessary to confirm or rule out Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of a tick infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria complex.

Tick activity occurs in the spring and fall.

Early symptoms of the disease are nonspecific and easily mistaken for a viral infection, while later symptoms cause severe damage to the joints (arthritis), heart (carditis), and nervous system (neuroborreliosis).

Diagnosis is a two-step process: detection of antibodies to the pathogen and confirmation of the result by blotting analysis.

When and who needs the test?

  • In case of positive test results for IgM and/or IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi.
  • In case of a double negative result, testing for IgM and/or IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi with persistent clinical symptoms for 12 weeks.
