Description

H. pylori antigen detection in feces is a highly sensitive, noninvasive test for confirming or ruling out active Helicobacter pylori infection. The test is considered the gold standard for noninvasive diagnostics due to its accuracy, speed, and safety.

H. pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum, causing diseases such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric malignancies (adenocarcinoma, MALT lymphoma).

Infection occurs through direct contact and the fecal-oral routes.

H. pylori may have additional virulence factors, such as the CagA gene. Strains containing the CagA gene cause more intense inflammation and increase the risk of developing peptic ulcers and gastric malignancies.

When and who needs the test?

  • If there is a family history of H. pylori infection.
  • If there is a family history of peptic ulcer disease or gastric malignancy.
  • If there are symptoms such as heaviness or discomfort in the stomach after eating, a feeling of early satiety during meals, a burning sensation/pain in the epigastrium (upper abdomen), bloating, or nausea.
  • If there is a diagnosis of gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.
  • If there is a diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia of unknown etiology.
  • Long-term treatment with aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • If there is a diagnosis of H. pylori infection.

PREPARATION AND COLLECTION RULES

  • Feces cannot be sent for testing after an enema, insertion of suppositories, or intake of castor or Vaseline oil.
  • According to the indications, the doctor prescribes a trial diet, which the patient follows for 4-5 days.
