Description
Melatonin is a hormone synthesized mainly by the pineal gland and, in smaller amounts, by the retina and the gastrointestinal tract. Melatonin plays an active role in regulating sleep and adaptation to changes in time zones, has immunostimulating, anti-stress, and anti-tumor effects, regulates the activity of the nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract, and influences the rate of aging of the body.
Determining melatonin levels is widely used to identify the causes of sleep disorders, menstrual cycle disturbances, and to diagnose certain mental disorders.
