Description
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is one of the most potent androgens in both men and women. It is formed from testosterone directly within target tissues through the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT plays a critical role in the development and function of the male reproductive system, particularly the prostate gland.
It also affects body and facial hair growth. In women, elevated DHT levels may contribute to hirsutism and acne.
When and who needs the test?
- Evaluation of androgen status (together with total testosterone)
- Detection of 5-alpha-reductase activity disorders.
- Disorders of puberty in boys.
- Morris syndrome.
- Clinical signs of hyperandrogenism in women (hirsutism, acne, menstrual cycle disorders).
- Alopecia in men and women
- Clinical signs of hypogonadism in men (erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, impotence).
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
- Monitoring effectiveness of BPH treatment with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
