2089. Helicobacter pylori, total antibodies

The H. pylori antibody test is a highly sensitive test that detects current or past Helicobacter infection by detecting specific antibodies to the pathogen that are produced in response to infection.

H. pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum, causing diseases such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric malignancies (adenocarcinoma, MALT lymphoma).

Infection occurs through direct contact and feco-oral contact. Determining total antibodies to H. pylori detects infection but does not determine whether the infection is active. Therefore, if necessary, it is supplemented by more specific tests (e.g., a stool antigen test).

It is not used to monitor treatment effectiveness, as antibodies can persist long after the infection is eradicated.

• If close ones are infected with H. pylori.
• If there is a family history of gastric ulcers or malignant neoplasms.
• If the following symptoms are present: a feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the stomach after eating, a feeling of early satiety after eating, a burning sensation/pain in the epigastrium (upper abdomen), bloating, nausea.
• If you have been diagnosed with gastritis or gastric ulcers.
• If you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia of unknown etiology.
• During long-term treatment with aspirin or before the use of long-term nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
