Description

IgA antibodies to Mycoplasma hominis indicate an active or recent infection. They are an important marker in the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of the urogenital tract, infertility, pregnancy complications, and latent infections.

Mycoplasma hominis is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the mucous membranes of the genitourinary tract. Normally, it can be present in small quantities, but in conditions of immunodeficiency, altered microbiota, or infection from a partner, it can cause inflammatory processes.

  • In women: it causes bacterial vaginosis, cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, and pregnancy complications such as miscarriages, premature births, and chorioamnionitis.
  • In men: it can cause urethritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, and impaired fertility.

IgA antibodies are early immune markers indicating an active phase or recent infection. Their detection in the serum indicates a local immune response in the urogenital mucosa. This is especially valuable in cases of asymptomatic or sluggish infection, when clinical manifestations are absent, but the infection continues and can lead to reproductive complications.

IgA testing for M. hominis is often performed as part of a comprehensive evaluation for infertility, miscarriage, suspected chronic inflammation, or as a follow-up test after PCR.

When and who needs the test?

  • For chronic or recurrent pelvic inflammatory diseases.
  • For women with suspected endometritis, cervicitis, infertility, or previous pregnancy losses.
  • For men with prostatitis, urethritis, or spermatogenesis disorders.
  • For couples planning pregnancy or IVF.
  • As a follow-up test after PCR or when results are inconclusive.
