2082. Placental lactogen

Description
Placental lactogen is a placental hormone that regulates metabolism in both mother and fetus. It is a sensitive marker of placental function. Its decrease may indicate fetoplacental insufficiency, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction. Its increase may indicate multiple pregnancies and gestational diabetes.
When and who needs the test?
During pregnancy:
- if fetoplacental insufficiency is suspected;
- in cases of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR);
- in cases of threatened or signs of preeclampsia/eclampsia;
- to monitor the condition of the placenta in multiple pregnancies;
- in cases of gestational diabetes;
- to clarify the condition in cases of Rh incompatibility.
As part of the diagnosis of trophoblastic diseases:
- hydatidiform mole (usual or invasive);
- choriocarcinoma;
- placental site trophoblastic tumor.
After treatment of trophoblastic complications:
- to monitor hormone levels after hysterectomy for placental tumor.
