Important information

*For pregnant women at 10 - 40 weeks of pregnancy inclusive.

Description

Placental lactogen is a placental hormone that regulates metabolism in both mother and fetus. It is a sensitive marker of placental function. Its decrease may indicate fetoplacental insufficiency, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction. Its increase may indicate multiple pregnancies and gestational diabetes.

Placental lactogen is a polypeptide hormone synthesized by the placental trophoblast> beginning in the second trimester of pregnancy. It belongs to the growth hormone and lactogen family and plays a vital role in the normal course of pregnancy.

Placental lactogen:

  • regulates carbohydrate and protein metabolism in the mother, promoting energy accumulation for fetal growth;
  • stimulates insulin synthesis in the mother;
  • participates in the development of lactation function in the mammary glands;
  • indirectly influences fetal growth and development through placental mechanisms.

Placental lactogen concentrations in the blood gradually increase from the 5th to 6th week and peak in the third trimester. Its level is an important indicator of the condition of the placenta and its hormonal activity.

When and who needs the test?

During pregnancy:

  • if fetoplacental insufficiency is suspected;
  • in cases of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR);
  • in cases of threatened or signs of preeclampsia/eclampsia;
  • to monitor the condition of the placenta in multiple pregnancies;
  • in cases of gestational diabetes;
  • to clarify the condition in cases of Rh incompatibility.

As part of the diagnosis of trophoblastic diseases:

  • hydatidiform mole (usual or invasive);
  • choriocarcinoma;
  • placental site trophoblastic tumor.

After treatment of trophoblastic complications:

  • to monitor hormone levels after hysterectomy for placental tumor.

Biological material

  • Venous blood
