2069. 17-α-oxy-progesterone (17-OHP)
Description
17-α-hydroxyprogesterone is a steroid hormone, a precursor of cortisol and androstenedione, without hormonal activity.
Determining its levels is used for the diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and the differential diagnosis of diseases with impaired reproductive health (in women – with menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, acne, infertility).
In combination, free testosterone index, FSH, LH, TSH, prolactin, and genetic testing are prescribed.
When and who needs the test?
As part of a comprehensive examination:
- In hyperandrogenic conditions (hirsutism, menstrual disorders, acne, seborrhea, virilization), infertility, pregnancy loss;
- In cases of established diagnosis of PCOS;
- In the presence of masses in the adrenal or ovarian region to exclude a tumor process;
- To exclude congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency (together with cortisol and androstenedione);
- To monitor the treatment of CAH with glucocorticoids.
