A comprehensive laboratory study includes markers for the three most common hepatitis viruses – A, B, and C. Identifying these markers allows for differential diagnosis of the disease in cases of similar clinical presentations.

Viral hepatitis is an infectious disease characterized by the development of inflammatory processes in the liver. They differ in their transmission routes, course, and consequences, but often have clinical manifestations that require laboratory differential diagnosis.

Hepatitis A is transmitted by the fecal-oral route (dirty hands, water, and food) and often has an acute course with fever, nausea, pain in the right upper quadrant, and yellowing of the skin. It does not become chronic.

Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through blood, sexually, and during childbirth. They are often asymptomatic or have mild symptoms (weakness, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort). They can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Markers included in the comprehensive test include:

• HAV (hepatitis A) – detects IgM antibodies, which appear 5-10 days after infection, before the onset of symptoms. This indicates a current or recent infection.
• HBV (hepatitis B) – detects IgM antibodies to HBcorAg (core antigen) and the surface antigen HBsAg. These markers can detect both acute and chronic infection, as well as vaccination.
• HCV (hepatitis C) – detects IgG antibodies to specific viral proteins (core, E2, NS3, NS4, NS5), which indicate a current or past infection.

This approach provides comprehensive screening and helps differentiate the type of hepatitis, even in the absence of clear symptoms.

• If you have symptoms of liver damage: weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, discomfort in the right upper quadrant.
• In case of contact with infected individuals or after potentially risky situations (medical procedures, tattooing, piercing, dental procedures, sharing needles, etc.).
• When planning a pregnancy.
• Before hospitalization, surgery, or blood donation.
• For individuals in high-risk groups – healthcare workers, hemodialysis patients, people with chronic liver disease, and those living with HIV.
