Description
IgM antibodies to the EBV capsid antigen (VCA) indicate the acute phase of infection or recent exposure. They are used to diagnose infectious mononucleosis and assess risks for pregnant women, immunosuppressed patients, and patients with prolonged lymphadenopathy.
When and who needs the test?
- Patients with symptoms of infectious mononucleosis.
- In pregnant women, to rule out primary infection, which poses risks to the fetus.
- To differentiate acute from chronic EBV infection.
- In patients with prolonged lymphadenopathy, leukocytosis, and atypical mononuclear cells.
- In patients with fevers and hepatitis of unknown etiology.
- In immunocompromised individuals, to detect the active phase of infection.
